On 24 October 2025, Idi Abbas was appointed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) of the Nigerian Navy.

He succeeds Emmanuel Ogalla, whose tenure as CNS ended with this change.

At the commissioning ceremony, emphasis was placed on immediate operational priorities: curbing maritime crime, fleet renewal, and improving personnel welfare.
